The Essential Guide to Gauges

Discover how Standard and Custom Gauges make manufacturing safer and more efficient.

What is a gauge?

A gauge is a device used in manufacturing to determine if a part’s dimensions align with specified limits or tolerances.

This makes them a key part of quality control processes.

Benefits of Gauges

Gauges do the hard, important work of keeping our world safe and as error-free as possible.

Since gauges tell us whether a part is the right shape and size needed to function properly, you can imagine how important they are to machines that are frequently used or used at times when precision is absolutely required like for the cars we drive or machines used in aerospace and defense.

In addition to safety, gauges bring efficiencies to assembly lines since they help us avoid rework.

What’s the difference between a fixed-type and deviation-type gauge?

You may hear people refer to fixed- or deviation-type gauges. The difference is that a fixed-type gauge is used to determine if a dimension is bigger or smaller than the standard or for parts that have special requirements.

Deviation-type gauges reveal how much a part deviates from the standard. Often, the gauge shows a unit of measurement to indicate the deviation, but it can also show the deviation using a range.

Whether a fixed- or deviation-type gauge, they can both be made custom to the specific dimensions of your unique components.

Are there different types of fixtures?

Yes, there are all kinds of gauges used to measure specific dimensions and parameters. Here are some of the most common gauges:

Gauges in Our World

Car manufacturers rely on gauges to ensure that the smallest to the largest parts meet exact specifications so cars run smoothly and safely.

Gauges are used to ensure the right pressure is present in compressors and pipelines and can help detect leaks.

Gauges are used in patient lift and weighing systems and to help track fluid flow rates in dialysis machines.
